Del Mar Eyelid surgery

Eyelid surgery or Blepharoplasty is the removal of excessive, sagging or wrinkled skin, as well as fat and sometimes muscle from the upper and/or lower eyelids. This treats eyelid "hooding" and under-eye "bags" which can cause a tired or aged appearance. Surgery is also performed when excess eyelid skin interferes with vision. The result is a more youthful, rested appearance of the eyes, softening of wrinkle lines, and widening of visual fields for partially blocked vision.

We also offer a revolutionary new approach to eyelid rejuvenation, using the Endotine TransBleph device, that is simple, quick and highly effective. It enables you to simultaneously elevate and shape your eye brow (brow lift) and, if necessary remove excess eyelid tissue (blepharoplasty) through a single small incision hidden in a fold of your eyelid skin.

Who is a good candidate for a Blepharoplasty?
  • If you have excessive, sagging or wrinkled upper or lower eyelid skin
  • If you have excessive upper eyelid skin that interferes with vision
  • If you have lost your natural upper eyelid crease
  • If you have puffy pouches of fat in the upper or lower lids that create a tired or aged appearance
What does a Blepharoplasty procedure involve?

An incision is made where the natural crease should be in the upper lids and below the lash line in the lower lids. Excess fat and skin are removed.

If only excess fat is present in the lower lids, it may be removed through an incision inside the lower lids with no external incision or scar (transconjunctival blepharoplasty).

How long does a Blepharoplasty take?

The surgery may take between 1-2 hours.

How long does it take to recover from a Blepharoplasty?
  • Any sutures are removed between 7-10 days
  • Contact lenses can be worn when comfortable - usually between 3-7 days
  • Swelling progressively disappears in 1-2 weeks
How long will the results of a Blepharoplasty last?

10 years +, with the majority of patients needing to undergo a Blepharoplasty only once in their lives.

What are my alternatives to having a Blepharoplasty?

There are no alternatives, but additional procedures that would enhance the result are: TransBleph, Facelift, Forehead/Brow Lift and a Chemical or Laser Peel.

What are the risks involved with having a Blepharoplasty?

The specific risks and the suitability of this procedure for a given individual can be determined only at the time of consultation. All surgical procedures have some degree of risk. Minor complications that do not affect the outcome occur occasionally. Major complications are rare.
